The Cashew tree is worth a thousand bars of gold!

Map

Palawan is the number one producer of cashew. In 2004, a projected 24,300 hectares of land was utilized for cashew plantation alone (One Town One Product (OTOP) Philippines).
It bears fruit during dry season and never misses a year without bearing. It can survive the high temperatures of 26ºC – 32ºC. Trees are grown from sea level to an altitude of 800 meters. It can adapt to different soil types even on marginal and acidic lands where no other crop could thrive.

A General Look at the Features and Uses of the Cashew Plant:

Cashew is a versatile plant!
One of its important features is its adaptability to the changing seasons in Palawan. It can grow in extremely dry conditions; this is why it’s called “drought-resistant”. Interestingly so, it can also thrive in places with heavy rainfall.

Cashew Tree

Palawan has these two types of climate. The northern and southern extremes experience two separate seasons: wet and dry. The northern part experiences torrential rains between July and August while the southern part is almost free from typhoons and heavy rainfall. The versatility of the cashew tree allowed it to be grown in almost all of the municipalities in the province.

In the Philippines, cashew bears flowers from November to March and harvesting may start in February, peak in May and lasts up to June.

The receptacle turns out as the apple of the fruit. It is green and hard when young. As it matures, the apple becomes bigger and softer and becomes juicier. The apples are ready for harvest when the color is full red or yellow. The nuts on the other hand are ready for harvest when the nuts turn ash gray in color.

The Fruit Composition

Cashew Apple

This is the accessory fruit/ false fruit. This is also the edible, juicy portion which is about 10 times heavier than the nut when ripe. When the apple is fully ripe, it detaches from the twig and falls to the ground. It is elongated, round or heart shaped, hence the name Anacardium which means “shaped like a heart”. The very young apple is green or purple, turning yellow or red when ripe. The ripe apple has a peculiar smell. It contains mostly invert sugar and high in vitamin C. The tannin content of the apples causes the astringent.

Drupe

This is the real fruit that grows on top of the pseudo fruit or the apple. Within the drupe is the seed called the cashew nut. When cut cross-wise, it has the following parts:

  1. The shell or the protective covering of the kernel
  2. The testa or the thin layer between the shell and the kernel
  3. The kernel is the milky, edible part of the cashew nut
